Nouveaux arrivants
I worked as an editor on the short film Nouveaux Arrivants, produced by cInémagine society of Alberta. Nouveaux Arrivants is a french-language original short film written (50 mins) and shot by Ryan Harper-Brown in Southern Alberta. The film brought together industry professionals, students at the University of Lethbridge, and members of the francophone community and was created with primary funding provided by Canadian Heritage.
I worked on and contributed to the animation, sound, color correction and director-approved edits of the film. I also worked on transcribing the dialogues into subtitles in French and subsequently translating them into English. The film was directed towards young learners in the K-12 district of Lethbridge, and thus the dialogues and subtitles were carefully vetted for its intended audience.
About the film: The city of Lethbridge sees two new arrivals, Jules (played by Karam Daoud) and Marceline (played by Valécia Pépin). Marceline, who flies to Lethbridge from France on an on the spur visit to see a friend; but finds it difficult to find him due to only being able to use French to communicate. In time, she runs into Jules, the only other Francophone she’s met in hours, only to find out that Jules has lost her memory and can’t remember much about how she ended up in Lethbridge or what her connection to the city was. The two become fast friends and help each other in getting to the bottom of the strange predicament they each find themselves in, only to realize there’s something far more sinister and otherworldly at play in Jules’s (re)appearance in the city of Lethbridge. Alongside, Hergé Montcalme the author/professor (played by Ryan Harper-Brown), the two friends go on an adventure all through the city of Lethbridge, as Jules slowly begins to regain her memories.
The entire film and credits can be found here, on the cInémagine Alberta website.
The film narrative was based on a science fiction narrative, which required me to conceptualize certain parts of the script. I made and storyboarded certain animation elements of the film using Houdini and Unity Cinemachine:
